AKIM was founded in 1951 by Israeli parents to improve the State’s welfare system and enhance the quality of their children’s lives.
AKIM is the largest and most comprehensive provider of programs and services for the intellectually disabled—serving 34,000 children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens throughout Israel.
AKIM believes that every individual, including those with an intellectual disability, deserves to have rich, fulfilling lives, and access to education, housing, employment and leisure activities. Each person is unique and requires varying levels of support from full-time, long-term assistance to physical rehabilitation and occupational therapy. Those served come from all over Israel and represent all religions and ethnicities.
AKIM operates 19 social clubs for 2000 adults, 59 sheltered workshops for 2500 adults, summer camps for 2000 teenagers and young adults, 24 group homes for 600 people, and 14 apartment buildings for 4600 adults.
With headquarters in Tel-Aviv, AKIM has an extensive network of 64 branches throughout Israel managed by 300 professionals, 2,000 volunteers and active parents.
AKIM’s services range from a vigorous advocacy program advancing the rights of the mentally handicapped, to kindergartens and nurseries, after-school activities, group homes, job training, recreational programs and special “holidays” for adults, as well as support, education and respite programs for parents and self-advocacy for the AKIM client.
AKIM’s ground-breaking work and innovative programming have become models for the care of the mentally disabled in Israel and beyond. Please help make a real difference to the lives of the mentally disabled and their families in Israel.
